LINCOLN PARK HISTORIC DISTRICT NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION
Minutes of the meeting held August 18, 2005, 6:30 p.m., at the Lincoln Park Pavilion.
President Brenda Dwiggins called the meeting to order, welcomed the attendees and guests, and introduced the guest speakers:
David Schnelle, Engineer for the City of Danville, presented a graphic of the proposed shared use bike/walking trail that would run from Hungry Hollow Road, up Logan Ave., along English St. to Vermilion, and north on Vermilion to the YMCA. If the proposed trail were fully funded by the grant, which has been submitted, part of this trail would travel through the LPHD. The proposed design of the trail was discussed, and questions from the audience relating to the trail and the historic brick streets in the LPHD were addressed.
The second speaker, Paul Sermersheim, Director of Peer Court, told about the Peer Court program: its structure and function, who was eligible, who decides on the sentences for community service, how it is financed, etc. Peer Court community service workers could be utilized in some Historic District projects, such as street and park cleanup, distributing flyers, and our storm drain-stenciling project. A Q&A session followed his presentation as well.
The reading of the July minutes was dispensed with, since they had been distributed with the meeting notices and were approved as presented.
The treasurer's report was unavailable.
Old Business:
>A follow-up sheet on the actions taken regarding concerns about blight and other violations of city codes in the district, which were brought to the attention of Jerry Wright, Neighborhood Services Coordinator, at the last meeting was distributed.
>Brenda announced that the Block Captains are working on the Historic District Directory project.
>The LPHD web site, www.lincolnparkhistoricdistrict.org, is online again and has a link to the City of Danville website. Plans are to feature upcoming events, historical information, and highlights about homes and families in our District.
>The storm drain stenciling will be done on Saturday, August 27th, at 10:00 a.m., with a rain date of Sept. 10. Flyers will be distributed to explain the project and recruit volunteers.
New Business:
>A post card survey for input on ideas for our LPHD meeting programs and format is in the planning stage.
>Saturday, Aug. 20, is the next clean-up date, and there will be another one on Tues., Sept. 6 from 6-7 p.m. The park has several events scheduled for Sept., so we want to keep it as litter-free and attractive as possible throughout the month.
>Upcoming Danville events were announced: The Renaissance Faire in Ellsworth Park, Walking in Lincoln's Footsteps, Vermilion Fall Festival, and the display of the replica of the Viet Nam Memorial. Several of these will involve Lincoln Park.
>Next meeting: Thursday, September 15, Lincoln Park Pavilion.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:10 PM.
