LPHDNA APRIL 2009 NEWSLETTER
Hello everyone!
It is already time for our first neighborhood meeting of 2009! I do hope to see more of you at this year's meetings. We need YOU with your ideas and support to keep our Neighborhood Association strong. Our first meeting is April 16th, 7:00 pm, at Friendly Town. The minutes of our last meeting, September 18, 2008, are on the back of this page.
This month's guest speaker is John Dreher, Neighborhood Development Manager, Department of Public Development, City of Danville. The topic of his talk is one very familiar to all of us: the Certificate of Appropriateness. All questions are welcome.
This past fall, the third "Leaf of Legacy" tree was planted in Lincoln Park paid for by our Association! This is a wonderful way to replenish the trees in the park along with honoring a loved one or a special occasion. If you are interested in sponsoring a tree, please see "cityofdanville.org" for details.
New officers will be elected in May. Nominations are welcome for ALL positions: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and Board of Directors. The assistance from Block Captains is vital. There can be more than one per block. Please consider volunteering your time and talents for the betterment of our community.
A committee of eight volunteers from our neighborhood, plus our two alderman, Mike Puhr and Jerry Askren, along with Sue Richter, Director of the Vermilion County Museum, are making plans for the 2009 House and Garden Walk in the Historic District. This will take place on Saturday, July 18, 2009 with a rain date of July 25th. This event will showcase our beautiful neighborhood with the proceeds raised going to our Association and towards the continued restoration of the historic Lamon House. Many thanks to the neighbors who are making this event possible by agreeing to open their homes, gardens and/or porches to the public. Volunteers will be needed to help in several areas. (More on that later.)
Nancy and Keith Bates and I attended the Sixth Annual Neighborhood Workshop recently. More details at the meeting.
Keep Vermilion County Beautiful is offering a grant program of up to $500 again this year to community groups. Come with ideas!
Please take a few minutes to help with the park cleanup on Saturday, April 25th, 9:00 am, north entrance. It is even more important this year for greater participation since there have been so many necessary cutbacks from the city. Let's step up to the plate and do our part. Maintaining Lincoln Park (and our own properties!) reflects positively not only on just our neighborhood but also on the entire city of Danville. By keeping the park clean, we could win the $100 lottery from Keep Vermilion County Beautiful again! Your help is appreciated.
Remember that neighbors contiguous to the Historic District are welcome to our meetings. If you know of a resident whose home borders our community and would like to participate in our activities, please bring them along!
A number of cars have been broken into in our neighborhood recently. Always report these incidents and any suspicious looking people to the police. Keep car doors locked and outside lights on during the night. Further discussion will take place at the meeting.
A very sincere thank you goes to the management of Sunset Memorial Park for providing the copies of this newsletter.
As always, I hope this finds you doing well. I look forward to seeing all of you at each monthly meeting this season, beginning April 16th. The remaining 2009 meeting dates are May 21st, June 18th, July 16th, August 20th and September 17th. Please mark your calendars. Let's continue to work TOGETHER in keeping the Lincoln Park Historic District clean, safe and beautiful! Thank you for your support.
Best regards,
Brenda Dwiggins President, LPHDNA
