LPHDNA MEETING NOTICE
FOR
MAY 17, 2007
Hi Neighbors!
Thanks to Tracy Stebbins, Neighborhood Services Coordinator, for an excellent presentation at last month's meeting. He explained, in detail, how he and his staff have and will continue to deal with property violators. (He'll give us an update next year.) Since taking this position in September 2006, he has already made quite a difference in cleaning up unsightly properties. Keep up the good work, Tracy! Thanks also to Aldermen Mike Puhr and Jerry Askren for attending and to Jerry for providing refreshments. Delicious! Jerry expressed his appreciation for the votes in his recent re-election as Ward 5 Alderman. (Minutes from the April meeting are on the back of this page.)
Condolences, from our Association, were sent to the Lester Shafland Family. Mr. Shafland, who was 97, passed away on April 28th. He and Mrs. Shafland (who preceded him in death) were long-time residents at 1113 Sheridan.
The speaker this month is Maria Sermersheim who coordinated and directs the Family Nutrition Program. Maria joined the University of Illinois Extension Vermilion County in 2003. She holds a BS in Agriculture extension from EARTH University in Costa Rica. She worked for two years in Mexico as a Lay Missionary and provides family health education and promoted family gardens to Mexican people. The Family Nutrition Program is a program dedicated to teaching and promoting safe and healthy eating for families. It includes education on basic nutrition, food safety, food budgeting and healthy lifestyles. She will cover these subjects as well as the Youth and Community Gardens now being established in Danville recently written up in the Commercial-News.
You'll see some new "reminder" signs around the neighborhood during the week of the meetings. The location was intentionally NOT mentioned in case it changes. The new location for our meetings this summer is at FRIENDLY TOWN, starting at 7:00 pm, for approximately one hour. We realized last month how much easier it is to conduct a meeting inside vs outside. A vote was taken and approved to request permission to continue meeting there. (Permission was granted by the Police Department.) It was a very good meeting but attendance was low. YOUR support is needed to keep our Neighborhood Association strong and productive. Everyone benefits. Bring a neighbor!
Election of officers will take place this month. Nominations are welcome for ALL positions: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Board of Directors. The assistance from Block Captains is vital. Please consider volunteering your time and talents, in any capacity, for the betterment of our community.
It was also voted on, and approved, to designate the fourth Saturday of each month, April through September, for cleaning up Lincoln Park, at 9:00 am, assembling at the north entrance to the park. More volunteers are needed. Thanks to those who helped in April. The park looked terrific when we finished. As I've said many times, it takes just a small amount of your time to make a BIG difference! The names of all volunteers were sent to Keep Vermilion County Beautiful to become eligible for their drawing in June for compost bins and kits. Thanks to Steve Lane, Superintendent of Parks, for the landscaping at the south entrance of the park and for Timothy of Timothy - Dann's Salon and Cathy Johnson for their plantings as well. It looks really nice!
The Second Annual LPHDNA Yard Sale will be on Saturday, June 9th (rain date June 16th). It WILL be announced in the Classified Section of the Commercial-News. Last year many missed the announcement that appeared in the Community Section. Any donations from your profits to the LPHDNA treasury would be greatly appreciated.
Danville officials, along with help from members of the Danville Garden Club and the Commercial-News, mark the 11th anniversary of the "Make It Bloom" contest. Nominations are being accepted until 5:00 pm, June 16. Contact either the Garden Club or CN for specific details.
The Danville Municipal Band's opening night at Lincoln Park is Sunday, June 3rd, 7:30 pm. Enjoying an evening in the park listening to the band is always a nice way to end a summer weekend. Mr. Fred Hubbard, known as the "Voice of the Municipal Band" and a member of the band for 41 years, died unexpectedly last December 18th. He will be greatly missed.
Please plan to attend this month's meeting. We need your support, ideas and camaraderie. Let's work TOGETHER to keep the Lincoln Park Historic District clean, safe and beautiful! I hope to see you at FRIENDLY TOWN, on Thursday, May 17th, 7:00 pm.
Best regards,
Brenda Dwiggins
President, LPHDNA
