JUNE 2006 NEWSLETTER

Hello Everyone!

How can it be mid June already!?!?! Summer is in full swing! It's good to see so many people enjoying the park. The Danville Municipal Band has started its Sunday night performances and what a nice way to end a weekend. We are very fortunate to have such a treat in our own neighborhood. Bring your lawn chairs and come out and support the band on Sunday nights. They begin playing at 7:30 pm and other than June 18th; there will be a performance every Sunday evening through August 6th. Arts in the Park is June 24th and 25th. On July 14th and 15th, at 8:00 pm, and July 16th, at 6:00 pm, the Lincoln Park Theatre Company's production of the musical "Cats" will take place.

Thank you to Nancy Brain from Sunset Funeral Home for speaking at last month's meeting on identify theft. It was frightening to hear how easily identify theft takes place. The safeguards she suggested to prevent being a victim were excellent. If you missed the meeting and would like information on this subject, please contact Nancy Brain directly at Sunset. It is well worth your time to discuss this with her. See the minutes on the back of this page for more details about the meeting.

Our guest speaker this month is Robin Miller who is a Board member for the Kennekuk Road Runners. He has been involved with this organization for over 20 years and currently is the Program Director for the Kennekuk Kids.

Our new 2006-2007 slate of officers is: Board of Directors, Dona Farnsworth and Rocky Hill; President, Brenda Dwiggins; Vice President, Joyce Melton; Secretary, Nancy Bates; Treasurer, Ellen Vanesse. Block Captains remain the same; however, more are needed, specifically for the 900 block of Grant and 1200 block of Sheridan. THANK YOU to all who are donating their time and efforts in helping to keep our neighborhood association strong and viable.

Great news!!! As I am writing this newsletter, Kathy Richards, from HALO, called and said that our Association won the spring $100 lottery for the Adopt-A-Spot program! BIG BIG thanks to all of you who help keep the park clean. And speaking of that, our next clean up is Saturday, June 17th, 9:00 am; meet at the north entrance. Everyone's help is appreciated.

The lucky winners of the Troy-Bilt Chipper-Shredder-Vacuum machine from Keep Vermilion County Beautiful are Frank and Renee Estock of Oakwood. They were overwhelmed when they received the call from Lynn Wolgamot saying they had won.

As I mentioned last month, the grant request from Keep Vermilion County Beautiful for winter banners around the park was declined. However, at our May meeting, our aldermen, Mike Puhr and Jerry Askrin, were the first to raise their hands with $100 donations to start a fund for these banners. Other generous neighbors made pledges also. The pledges currently total $500. Our goal is to have three banners on each street surrounding the park. Each banner is $100 plus another $100 for the initial set-up fee. The set-up fee will come out of the Association's treasury. If you'd like to contribute to this fund, please make your check payable to "LPHDNA" with a notation "banner fund" and mail it to our new Treasurer, Ellen Vanesse at 901 W. Center St. These bright blue and white banners will add beauty and distinction to our community during the winter months.

More good news! The application submitted to the HALO Paint Blitz project, which takes place on June 17th, was approved for one our neighbors, Loretta Darnell, at 1015 N. Grant Street. Congratulations Loretta!

The Historic Preservation Commission is seeking a volunteer from the Historic District to serve as an alternate on their committee. Presently, the seven-member commission needs four to establish a quorum to conduct business. There are times when that can be difficult. In the event that a quorum is not achieved, Certificates of Appropriateness could get issued by default. To avoid this, the Commission is considering changing the Preservation Ordinance to provide for seven Commissioners and one alternate. Quorum would still be four, but there would be one spare body to fill in when others may be unavailable. They are also in need of one replacement Commissioner that the ordinance requires be filled with an attorney. Please contact me if you are willing to serve.

The cost to purchase 1,000 4x5 note cards depicting a 1915 scene of Lincoln Park was approved at last month's meeting. They are being printed locally and will be sold as a fundraising effort at the Lamon House during the weekend of Arts in the Park on June 24th and 25th. They will also be sold at the Vermilion County Museum and possibly the First National Bank at Gilbert and Fairchild. There will be an article in the Commercial-News on June 20th about the note cards and their availability.

Updates for your Directory are listed below.

Thank you, Harold Melton, for donating your 50/50 raffle winnings to the LPHDNA treasury!

The success of our neighborhood association in helping to keep our community kept in high standing is directly related to YOUR SUPPORT. Your voice needs to be heard; your participation is needed and appreciated. Please attend the next meeting on Thursday, June 15th, at 7:00 pm, in the Pavilion. Thank you.

Brenda Dwiggins

President, LPHDNA
