AUGUST 2006 NEWSLETTER
Hello Everyone!
Please plan to attend our monthly meeting on Thursday, August 17th, 7:00 pm, at the bandstand. Our guest speakers will be both candidates for the position of Vermilion County Resident Circuit Judge in the Fifth Judicial Circuit, Nancy Fahey and Frank Young. Both candidates will speak briefly and then the floor will be open for questions. This is a good opportunity to better know the candidates before your vote is cast on November 7th.
Thanks to District 5 Aldermen, Mike Puhr and Jerry Askren, for attending the July meeting. Your interest and support are appreciated. It's always great to have you join us.
LPHDNA received a $100 donation from Mr. Lester Shafland, in memory of his wife, Melvine, and "their 44 years on Sheridan St." Thank you, Mr. Shafland, for your most generous donation. Our sincere condolences are sent in the loss of your beloved wife.
Congratulations to all of our neighborhood winners in the "Make It Bloom" contest sponsored by the Danville Garden Club. It is wonderful to see so many of you take such pride (and time!) in your property. Your efforts are appreciated and admired. Keep up the good work!
Thanks to the Danville Municipal Band for an excellent season! Hundreds enjoyed their music and we look forward to attending the performances at Lincoln Park starting in early June 2007. Their next scheduled performance is Sunday, December 17th, 7:00 pm, at St. James Church.
Last month's yard sale brought in donations of $150 to our treasury from very thoughtful and generous neighbors. Thank you Cathy Johnson, BJ and Stan Stock, Nancy and Keith Bates and Joyce and Harold Melton for your donations.
The Historic Preservation Commission is still seeking one replacement Commissioner. The ordinance requires an attorney fill this position. Please contact me if you are willing to serve.
You may have seen the recent article in the "Commercial-News" concerning the possibility of the Danville neighborhood associations raising money to have banners placed in each of their neighborhoods around the city. I am in the process of sorting out the details. The president of each association will be contacted to ask if they are interested in participating. The banner design will be the same throughout the city with each individual neighborhood association having their own name imprinted. By ordering 20 or more, the price will drop from $100 each to $80; by ordering over 50, the price will go down to $70 each. LPHDNA currently has received enough donations to buy six, maybe seven (depends on how the pricing goes). Our goal is 12. If you'd like to contribute to this fund, please make your check payable to "LPHDNA" with a notation "Banner Fund" and mail it to Ellen Vanesse, LPHDNA Treasurer, 901 W. Center St., Danville IL 61832. These bright blue and white banners will add beauty and distinction to all communities during the winter months. Donations for this order must be received by mid September.
Thank you, Sue Jones (who lives on Sherman Blvd), for volunteering to be the Block Captain for the 1200 block of Sheridan Dr.
Park clean up is Saturday, August 19th, 9:00 am. Meet at the north entrance to the park. Volunteers are needed. The time involved is less than an hour. You, as an individual walker in and around the park, are eligible for a $25 lottery drawing from Keep Vermilion County Beautiful by completing a form and sending it to Lynn Wolgamot. You'll be provided a "picker" free of charge. The forms (and a few "pickers") will be available at the meeting. All forms for this year must be received by KVCB by September 1st. You may recall that LPHDNA recently won their $100 lottery.
Thank you, Ed Dwiggins, for donating your 50/50 raffle winnings to the LPHDNA treasury.
Updates for your Directory are listed on the back of this page.
The success of our neighborhood association in helping to keep our community in high standing is directly related to YOUR SUPPORT. I cannot stress this enough. Your voice needs to be heard; your participation is needed and appreciated. Please attend the next meeting on Thursday, August 19th, at 7:00 pm, at the bandstand. You may want to bring your own folding chair. Thank you.
Brenda Dwiggins
President, LPHDNA
