LPHDNA AUGUST 2008 NEWSLETTER

Last Meeting of 2008 is next month - September 18th

Hello everyone!

Thanks to Nathan Ingold, Neighborhood Services Coordinator for the City of Danville, for speaking at our last meeting. He expressed his willingness to assists our community with all issues within his realm of responsibility. Danville neighborhood associations are fortunate to have Nathan's expertise. (See the Minutes on the reserve side of this page for meeting details.)

This month's guest speaker is Dana Schaumburg, Executive Director of Downtown Danville, Inc. Please come to the meeting on August 21st, 7:00 pm, at Friendly Town, to hear, first hand, Dana's plans for downtown.

FINALLY!!!! The eyesore at 1218 Sherman is gone!! Many years of efforts from neighbors have finally come to fruition. As suggested by an attendee at the July meeting, that empty lot will be awarded the "Most Improved Property" in September!!! Thanks to the City for following through with your promises AND thanks neighbors for being persistent!

The July 19th Neighborhood Yard Sale was a real success. I've received a lot of good feedback from neighbors. Thanks to all who participated in making it successful. Thanks to Cathy Johnson for placing the ad in the paper.

Congratulations to Greg and Judy Howell, 1214 Sherman, for being awarded the "Most Improved Property" designation for this month! Greg and Judy, your place looks great!

More volunteers are needed to help with the 2009 Garden Walk. Please contact me if you're willing to help. The list will be given to Sue Richter, at the Vermilion County Museum, in September. She and her staff will determine if there are enough volunteers to handle the needs.

The issue of alleyways that are in bad condition came up at the last meeting and their need for trimming and cleaning up. One that was mentioned in particular is between the 1200 blocks of Sherman and Sheridan. Alderman Mike Puhr tells me that with the cut in the budget coupled with fewer workers, the City encourages the neighbors to take care of their portion of the alley, ie. brush, weeds, overgrown shrubs, trash, etc.  The City will, when possible, grade and apply rock as the needs arise. The City would also make available the Pride Grows trailer and tools, as well as a dumpster, if we, the Association, would be interested in organizing an alley cleanup.

Thanks to Kim Thompson for providing very tasty refreshments.

I look forward to seeing you at the meeting on August 21st. Thank you for your support.

Best regards,

Brenda Dwiggins President, LPHDNA

LINCOLN PARK HISTORIC DISTRICT NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION MEETING

JULY 17, 2008

The meeting was called to order at 7:00 pm. by the president, Brenda Dwiggins, who welcomed the attendees and introduced the speaker, Nathan Ingold, the Neighborhood Services Specialist at city hall. Nathan, 26 years old, a Danville native, returned to Danville after military service, and is an active member of the Holiday Hills Neighborhood organization.  He asked the group to call him for any concern as he can liaison with any agency in Danville and can be a "one-stop shopping" for any needs and concerns.  In his job, he does lots of computer work for the city, is a part time inspector, takes pictures and handles complaints such as lowering the speed limit on Shady Lane. A question and answer session followed and he promised to follow up on various issues, such as speeding around the park and rules governing improvement to property using the historic district guidelines.

Nathan can be reached at 43l-2274 and ningold@cityofdanville.org.

Reading of the minutes was dispensed with since they were published in the June newsletter.

Treasurer, Ellen Vanesse, reported a balance of $l, 240.20.

Old Business

Alderman Mike Puhr reported on the status of demolition of decrepit houses in our neighborhood.

The city is demolishing within set areas to utilize use of the equipment and the Lincoln Park area will be having demolitions immediately.

July 26th was set as the next neighborhood park clean up.  It was also reported that we now have a city employee cleaning the park on a regular basis.

Yard Sale to be Sat., July 19th, 8-1.

Two neighborhood signs are still missing.

Garden Walk, 2009, still needs more volunteers.

New Business

The Association voted to award the improvement award sign to Judy and Doug Howell, 1214 Sherman.

Aldermen Mike Puhr and Jerry Askren explained TIF districts because of the proposed Walgreen project on Fairchild and Gilbert.  Carle Medical Center was the first project to use this method within our area.

The meeting adjourned at 8:30 pm with refreshments provided by Kim Thompson.
