Hello Neighbors!

Please join us on Thursday, September 15th, at 6:30 PM, for the last potluck and regular meeting of this season in the Lincoln Park Pavilion. Please bring a covered dish and your table service. As always, you are welcome to join us at 7:00 PM for the meeting only. I am very pleased to announce that our guest speaker will be Mayor Scott Eisenhauer. Mayor Eisenhauer has shown a great deal of support and interest in neighborhood associations and recognizes how they have made a positive difference. Come and hear what he has to say!

The minutes of the previous meeting on August 18th are on the back of this page. It was a great meeting! Attendance was up and our thanks to Vice Mayor and Alderman Mike Puhr for his participation. It was wonderful having so many of you present! Thanks to all who attended. Mr. David Schnelle, City Engineer, gave an excellent briefing on the possibilities of enhancements to our area and Mr. Paul Sermersheim, Director of Peer Court, spoke about its structure and objectives. Both speakers were well received and were most gracious with a "Q&A" session.

The storm drain stenciling project on August 27th went very well…. thanks to the 19 volunteers (including students from Peer Court) who donated about two hours of their time distributing flyers and stenciling 47 drains. We learned very quickly that spray paint was needed instead of rollers. After that adjustment was made, everything went quite smoothly. It was an excellent collaborative effort from Prairie Rivers Network, City of Danville, Peer Court, HALO and neighborhood volunteers. Our project received excellent media coverage from WICD News Channel 15, WCIA Channel 3, the "Commercial-News" and "News-Gazette"! We are grateful for their contribution in bringing this very important environmental issue to the public's attention. Thank you everyone!

The neighborhood directory is currently being coordinated. The Block Captains have worked diligently going door-to-door completing and collecting forms. If you haven't returned your form to your representative, please do so as soon as possible. The FREE directory will be a very useful tool to have at your fingertips. Personal donations that have been made in support of our Association are greatly appreciated. We are pleased that some of you are advertising your business! Terrific! As previously mentioned, completion of the directory is targeted for late October.

Lincoln Park cleanups on August 20th and September 6th were very successful. Thank you to ALL of the volunteers for taking the time to help keep Lincoln Park (and bordering streets) free of litter! The September 6th cleanup was specifically set for that date in preparation for the display of "The Traveling Wall" which was at Lincoln Park September 8th through 12th. Thank you Joyce and Harold Melton, Harry and Colletta Johnson, Dorothy Puhr and Mike Olson for your extra effort. The orderly condition of the park made for both a peaceful and very respectful setting in tribute to those who lost their lives during the Viet Nam era.

There will be periodic flyers distributed announcing future park cleanup dates. YOUR HELP IS NEEDED for approximately one hour, usually less, to keep Lincoln Park pristine! This short time makes a big difference. Please help!

Landscaping at the south entrance of the park will take place this fall.

Jerry Short was the winner of the "50/50" raffle at our August meeting. Thank you, Jerry, for donating your winnings to the LPHDNA treasury!! Your kind gesture is most appreciated!!

www.lincolnparkhistoricdistrict.org. Our website is being kept current by Alan Woodrum who is most graciously donating his time. His willingness to do this is so generous and we thank you, Alan, for your support and excellent work!

Jerry Wright, Neighborhood Services Coordinator, has made progress concerning unsightly properties in the Historic District.

Would you like to make a big difference in a child's life? Do you have an hour a week to spare? Our neighborhood school, Garfield Grade School, is looking for tutors to work with individual or small groups of students in grades K-5.  Tasks include: listening to students read aloud, helping them to memorize spelling words, using flash cards to learn number facts, and other very basic skills you probably used with your own children to help them with their homework.  Many of these children receive no help at home and they are at risk for continuing to fall further and further behind in grade level.  If you are interested in becoming a tutor, call Mrs. Garner, the Principal at Garfield School, at 444-1750.  She will be delighted to hear from you!  If you would like more information about the program from two veteran volunteers, call Keith and Nancy Bates at 443-3932.

A reminder, once again, to make your reservation for "Walking in Lincoln's Footsteps" taking place on September 17th and 18th (the same weekend as the Little Vermilion Fall Festival at Ellsworth Park) through the Museum at 442-2922 or visit their website at www.vermilioncountymuseum.org.

LPHDNA tee shirts! I've checked into having "Lincoln Park Historic District Neighborhood Association" printed on tee shirts as a fundraiser. Help build up the treasury and show your pride in our neighborhood by ordering one… or two….. or more! More details to follow.

On a personal note, my first few months as president of your neighborhood association have been most enjoyable! We have accomplished a lot together in this short period and had fun at the same time!! Many thanks are extended for the support received from Mayor Scott Eisenhauer, from Vice Mayor and Alderman Mike Puhr, Alderman Jerry Askren, John Dreher, Theresa Brazelton (in Mr. Dreher's office), our Board members and officers, the Block Captains and YOU!! Because of EVERYONE'S support and pride in the neighborhood, our community is clean, safe and beautiful! Having said that, there is always room for improvement and more work to be done. Many common goals have been and will continue to be accomplished by working TOGETHER!

I hope to see all of you at our last scheduled potluck and/or meeting in the Pavilion on September 15th. We'll have another "50/50" raffle! See you there!
