SEPTEMBER 2006 NEWSLETTER

Hello Everyone!

Please plan to attend our last monthly meeting of this calendar year on Thursday, September 21st, 7:00 pm, at the bandstand. The lights WILL be on, unlike last month! Our guest speaker will be Mr. Bob Yapp, newly appointed Executive Director of Renaissance Danville. Mr. Yapp is a nationally known neighborhood revitalization expert, author, consultant and host of the former national PBS television series "About Your House with Bob Yapp." Let's give him a huge welcome to our community and to Danville!

Thanks to Vice Mayor and Aldermen Mike Puhr, as well as the rest of you, for attending the August meeting. Your interest and support are always appreciated. A note of thanks was received from Nancy Fahey for allowing her to speak at the last meeting.

Ten (10) Lincoln Park Historic District winter banners have been ordered. Donations total $821. As it turns out, by ordering 10 custom banners, we got a price break. Instead of $100 apiece, each banner is $78. An additional $150 set-up fee is charged EACH time an order is placed. It was agreed from the beginning that the LPHDNA treasury would absorb the cost of this fee. To break it down: $78 for each banner ($780) plus $150 set-up fee equals $930 total. After deducting the amount of the donations ($821) from the total ($930), a balance of $109 will come from the Association treasury. Those who donated to make this purchase possible are Vice Mayor and Aldermen Mike Puhr, Alderman Jerry Askren, Sue Jones, Vic and Ellen Vanesse, Dorothy Puhr, Joyce and Harold Melton, Nancy and Keith Bates, Dona Farnsworth, Ed and Brenda Dwiggins, 50/50 raffle donations and proceeds from the community yard sale from Cathy Johnson, the Meltons, the Bates', B J Stock and Sue Jones. THANK YOU one and all!! In addition to our own banner purchase, Rhea Ann Weatherford coordinated with Roger Boen, Supervisor of Danville Township, for Danville Township to sponsor an additional three (3) banners picturing Abraham Lincoln to be placed with ours. Thank you Rhea Ann and Roger! The effort to partner with other neighborhood associations (to get an even better price by ordering 20 or more banners) did not materialize. Our own Banner Fund is ongoing so that replacements can be bought, if necessary.

A vote was taken at the August meeting, and approved, to purchase one (1) "Leaf a Legacy" tree from the PRIDE Grows program within the Public Works Department of the City of Danville. The tree has been purchased ($200) and will be planted in Lincoln Park this fall. The words "Lincoln Park Historic District Neighborhood Association 2006" will be on the marker. Since so many trees are reaching their life span in the park, attendees agreed that a yearly "Leaf a Legacy" tree from LPHDNA would be a terrific tradition.

The landscaping at the south entrance to the park has not been accomplished due to the Parks Department being shorthanded. Steve Lane, Parks Superintendent, tells me that every effort will be made to get it done this fall.

A vote was taken, and approved, to welcome all neighbors to our Association contiguous to the Historic District. This came about as a result of interest shown in our Neighborhood Association from nearby residents. A notice will be in the "Commercial-News" letting this be known and that nearby neighbors are most welcome to participate in our activities. However, they will not be able to vote since they do not reside within the boundaries of the Historic District as designated in the LPHDNA Constitution and Bylaws. Please pass the word to anyone living near, but outside the borders of the Historic District, that we look forward to their participation!

Mr. Yapp has invited the LPHDNA to participate with The West Downtown Neighborhood Association, in "The Great Unveiling" on September 23rd at 421 Oak St. (Same day as the park clean up.) In the tradition of a barn raising, volunteers will be removing (unveiling) the non-original siding from the exterior of a Queen Anne style home to reveal the original wood exterior. A workshop about how to achieve affordable 12-to-15 year exterior paint jobs will also be held. Everyone in central Illinois and Indiana is invited to this free event. The media will cover the activities of the day. More details at the meeting.

Welcome to our new neighbors, Jacqueline and Mary Lopez, at 1125 N. Logan Avenue! Congratulations on your new home and becoming a part of our community!

Park clean up is Saturday, September 23rd, 9:00 am. Meet at the north entrance to the park. Please volunteer! The time involved is less than an hour. You, as an individual walker in and around the park, are eligible for a $25 lottery drawing from Keep Vermilion County Beautiful by completing a form and sending it to Lynn Wolgamot. You'll be provided a "picker" free of charge.

Everyone at the meeting agreed to add all of the money from the 50/50 raffle to the Banner Fund.

Updates for your Directory are listed below.

The success of our neighborhood association in helping to keep our community in high standing is directly related to YOUR SUPPORT. I cannot stress this enough. Your voice needs to be heard; your participation is needed and appreciated. Please attend the next meeting on Thursday, September 21st, at 7:00 pm, at the bandstand. You may want to bring your own folding chair. Thank you.
