LPHDNA SEPTEMBER 2008 NEWSLETTER

Hello everyone!

Thanks go to Dana Schaumburg, Executive Director of Downtown Danville, Inc. for speaking at our last meeting. Dana expressed her strong desire to bring the positive aspects of downtown to the forefront and to strengthen its economic base. Please support the businesses in any way possible. (See the Minutes on the back for meeting details.)

This month's guest speaker is State Representative Bill Black (R). After Mr. Black's presentation, the floor will be open to questions. Please plan to attend the meeting on September 18th, 7:00 pm, at Friendly Town. This is the last scheduled meeting of 2008.

Deepest sympathy is extended to Mrs. Gloria Dye, who resides in the Historic District, for the tragic loss of her precious granddaughter, Aneya Jaiamiah Dye. Please keep Mrs. Dye and her family in your thoughts and prayers.

Cluttered and overgrown alleyways are of great concern in our neighborhood. Clean alleyways are not just the responsibility of the city but yours also. For safety reasons AND appearance, please trim overgrown bushes and shrubs, remove all trash and please continue to maintain it. Also, as you read in the recent flyer from the Department of Public Safety that was delivered by the Block Captains, theft of manhole covers in alleyways is a real hazard. Please keep an eye out for vehicles parked in alleyways near manholes. If possible, get a description and license plate number. Notify Commander Jane McFadden, 431-2225, or Detective Bruce Stark, 431-2246 immediately.

Animal control is another issue of concern. All dogs must be on a leash or in an enclosed fence at all times. Also, a pet that is kept outside for more than eight hours must be provided shelter. Violation of these ordinances could lead to a fine. For the safety of your pet as well as other pets and their owners, please abide by these law.

The news of the planned closure of Kickapoo State Park on November 1, 2008 is devastating to most everyone. If you feel this way, let's rally in support of keeping it open by writing to the governor's office expressing your views. Your help is needed!! Send a letter to Gov Rod R. Blagojevich, 207 Statehouse, Springfield IL 62706 and a copy to him at James R. Thompson Center, Floor 16, 100 W. Randolph St., Chicago IL 60601

With school now in session, please consider volunteering your time as a tutor at Garfield school. Contact Principal DeMarko at 444-1750 for more details. As always, watch for stopped school busses and for children crossing streets.

As of this writing, I do not have any further information on the possibility of a Garden Walk in 2009. Hopefully, I'll have more details at the meeting.

The "Most Improved Property" sign has been moved to what is now a vacant lot at 1218 Sherman!! Yeah!

Please donate a few minutes of your time by participating in the park cleanup on September 27th, 9:00 am, north entrance. Your help is appreciated.

Sue Jones won the 50/50 raffle in August. Thanks, Sue, for donating your winnings to the Association.

I look forward to seeing you at our last meeting of this year on September 18th. Thank you for your support.

Best regards,

Brenda Dwiggins President, LPHDNA
