LINCOLN PARK HISTORIC DISTRICT NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION

OCTOBER 2005 NEWSLETTER

FRIENDSHIP * COMMUNITY * PRESERVATION

www.lincolnparkhistoricdistrict.org

Hello Everyone!

Many thanks go to those of you who attended our last regular meeting of 2005 on September 15th. Also, a special thank you to Mayor Scott Eisenhauer for being our guest speaker and to Alderman Jerry Askren for attending. Mayor Eisenhauer stressed the importance of neighborhood associations and thanked LPHDNA for working together to help strengthen our community and expressed his strong belief that neighborhood associations DO make a positive difference. He then talked about the financial structure of our city and how choices must be made by each of us as to how and where our tax dollars should be spent. The "Q&A" session that followed brought to light several issues that concern all of us. (See more details of the meeting in the Minutes on the back of this page.)

Approval was made at the last meeting to resume our monthly meetings in April instead of May as previously agreed upon. A notice will be sent in plenty of time so you can plan to attend. Beginning with our April 2006 meeting, we will no longer have the potluck. We're hoping this will enable more of you to come to the meetings. Desserts are always welcome!! The meetings will be at 7:00 pm, on the third Thursday of the month, from APRIL through September. Please plan to attend; your input is needed, wanted and very important! New Board members and officers will be elected in May. If you'd like to serve, please do not hesitate to let us know.

LINCOLN PARK CLEANUP IS THIS SATURDAY, OCTOBER 8TH from 9:00 am - 10:00 am. Please volunteer for approximately one hour to help keep our park and bordering streets free of litter. It makes such a big difference in such a small amount of time. I recently spoke to Steve Lane, Superintendent of Parks. Landscaping at the south entrance to the park will begin this month.

Carol Case was the "50/50" raffle winner! Thank you, Carol, for donating your winnings to the LPHDNA treasury! That was very kind of you.

The free neighborhood directory is currently being created. Thanks to all who helped collect the neighborhood information and donations from advertisers. A completion date has not yet been determined.

Fundraisers/activities are already lined up for 2006: LPHDNA tee shirts and caps, sale of note cards with a picture of Lincoln Park taken in 1915 on the front, a neighborhood yard sale, participation in the July Garden Walk and, as always, park cleanups. I am sure more will come along as we get into the 2006 season. Please contact me if you hear of any worthwhile community projects.

Certificate of Appropriateness: Please keep in mind that since we are residents of the Historic District, a Certificate of Appropriateness is needed for exterior work on our homes. Generally, submission of this Certificate is simply a formality that provides information regarding the proposed work desired to the Historic Preservation Commission. This committee has been formed to help maintain the historical integrity and character of our homes, NOT to discourage improvements. The form can be obtained online (www.cityofdanville.org) or by picking one up at the Department of Public Development at the Municipal Building, 17 W. Main Street.

Architectural/Historic Survey: Work is being done by John Dreher, Neighborhood Development Manager, to update the Architectural/Historic Survey to include the homes on the west side of Logan Avenue. The original Survey was put together in 2000 when our neighborhood (except for the west side of Logan Avenue) was designated a Historic District.

Tutors are still needed at Garfield School to work with individuals or small groups K-5. Please contact Mrs. Garner at 444-1750 for more details.

Lamon House Open House: The volunteers at the Lamon House have invited everyone in the Historic District (and anyone else you'd like to bring along) to its Open House on Sunday, October 23rd, from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm. Light refreshments will be served. It is probably the oldest frame residence in Danville and has connections with several persons of Danville history. Come and learn more about its history and see the beautiful renovations that have taken place since its arrival to Lincoln Park in 1982. Please mark your calendar!

Please keep Rhea Ann Weatherford, previous LPHDNA President, in your thoughts and prayers as she begins six months of chemotherapy. Rhea Ann has contributed not only a great deal to this community but also to the entire city of Danville. Thank you, Rhea Ann, for all of your hard work! We wish you a full recovery.

I hope to see you at the Lamon House on October 23rd and I certainly look forward to seeing ALL of you when our monthly meetings resume on April 20, 2006! Have a safe and happy fall and winter. (Daylight Savings Time ends October 30th … just a few weeks until we set our clocks back an hour!) Thanks for all of your support!!

LINCOLN PARK HISTORIC DISTRICT NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION MEETING MINUTES

Minutes of the LPHDNA meeting held on September 15, 2005; 6:30 p.m. at the Lincoln Park Pavilion.

Following the potluck supper, President Brenda Dwiggins, who welcomed the attendees and introduced the guests, Mayor Scott Eisenhower and Alderman Jerry Askren, called the meeting to order.

Guest speaker, Mayor Scott Eisenhower, congratulated our neighborhood association for its leadership and activities and reiterated his belief that such associations are key to maintaining quality of life in Danville's neighborhoods.  He also presented the options the City has in funding road repair and replacement, the progress on building demolitions, and the fiscal condition of the city.  He took questions from the Association dealing with parking for events in Lincoln Park, drug dealers in the District, and other concerns of our members.  Promoting the use of the band shell by more performing groups from both the city and county was suggested.

The minutes of the August meeting were approved as distributed in the newsletter.

The Treasurer reported a balance of $519.90.

Old business:

Reports were given on the status of code enforcement sites, park cleanups (effective), the Neighborhood Directory (in progress), the storm drain stenciling project (completed), the LPHDNA website (completed), the South Entrance landscaping (slated for October), and the park lights (almost completed).

The exhibition of the replica of the Vietnam Wall in the park was very well attended and well received.  Brenda reported, via Jeanie Cooke, Danville Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, that approximately 25,000 people visited the event. Lincoln Park provided a beautiful setting for it.

New business:

>This is the last meeting of the year for the Association; the first one in 2006 will be in April.

>The Association voted to buy a microphone for our meetings.

>A Get Well card was sent to former president, Rhea Ann Weatherford, who had major surgery.

>Next park cleanup will be Oct. 8, 9:00 a.m.

>Garfield School needs tutors…volunteers are encouraged to call Mrs. Garner at 444-1750.

>LPHDNA will be involved with the 2006 Garden Walk, which is coordinated by The Vermilion County Museum.
